In the fifth beatitude, Jesus pronounces a blessing upon those who are merciful, explaining that those who show mercy will be shown mercy by God. Pray this beatitude with me today over our children and grandchildren.
Matthew 5:7 “God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”
Father, you have shown us such great mercy. You have not treated us as our sins deserve. In spite of our unworthiness, you have shown us favor and grace. Thank you!
I pray today that our children and grandchildren will come to know your extravagant mercy in the way that we have. As they experience that mercy for themselves, may they extend that same mercy to others who also do not deserve it.
Throughout their lives, they will be hurt, abused and offended by many. Some of the wrongs will be intentional, and others accidental. May they not hold onto their anger. May they not let their anger develop into a root of bitterness that grows and bears vengeful fruit.
Just as they have freely and undeservedly received your mercy, may they extend mercy and forgiveness towards those who wrong them. Let the blessing of peace and freedom be theirs as a result. Let them learn to say like Jesus did, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Thank you for stirring up within our children and grandchildren hearts of mercy. Empower them to forgive where forgiveness is not deserved. Enable them to show kindness to those in need who can never repay them. Freely they have received from you, freely may they give to others.
Let the reality of your mercy towards them so explode in their hearts that it overflows to others in their lives. Work this transformation in them by your Holy Spirit!
